Dyad Occupational Therapy Treatment

What is Dyad Treatment?

Dyad Occupational Therapy Treatment is a unique and engaging approach where two children with similar therapeutic goals in the areas of social engagement, flexibility or play skills are paired together during sessions. This collaborative format allows children to work not only with the therapist but also alongside a peer— which provides real-life practice for social skills in a highly supported environment.

Why Dyads?

Working in pairs opens up a world of opportunities that aren’t always possible in individual therapy. Dyad sessions are ideal for targeting:

    • Social Skills – such as turn-taking, cooperation, learning how to notice and read others’ emotions, sharing, and communication
    • Self-Regulation – learning how to manage emotions in social settings, making a group plan, and flexing to another person’s suggestions.
    • Problem-Solving – working through challenges as a team, problem-solving how to have fun together.

Who Benefits from Dyad Sessions?

Dyads are especially helpful for children who could benefit from:

  • Supportive adult coaching in a natural and safe play environment
  • Self-Regulation practice
  • Opportunities to use flexible thinking
  • Expressing their needs as well as listening to others’ needs
  • Social play with similar-aged peers

This is an opportunity for kids as young as 4 and including teenage years.

How Does It Work?

During a dyad session, the therapist guides both children through structured and play-based activities that encourage cooperation and joint participation. Every session is tailored to target each child’s individual OT goals while creating space for natural interaction and friendship-building.

Next steps:

Therapists carefully match pairs based on age, goals, personality, and developmental level to ensure the most effective and supportive environment.

  • Matching

We have found it is best to get to know your child individually before matching.  However, the number of treatment sessions needed before moving into a dyad will be individually determined on intake.

Why Families Love Dyads:

Children are more motivated and challenged when learning with a peer
Real-time practice with immediate feedback
Social growth in a supportive, therapeutic setting
Often more cost-effective than individual therapy
